Race for Cyberspace

Volunteers

Thank you for volunteering for Race for Cyberspace 2011. Below are descriptions of the roles we most need.

Please contact your room parent to sign up!

To ensure success we need your help to line up the following parent volunteers for your class:
        (4) lap counters for each K-3 classroom
(5-6) lap counters for each 4/5 classroom
        (1) water attendant per classroom

Below is a list of responsibilities for each volunteer:

Lap Counter

  • Lap Counters must arrive at the classroom 15 minutes before race time. Group students together. Personalized Race bibs will be given to teachers the day before the Race for Cyberspace along with a box of safety pins. Pin personalized race bibs on the BACK of the studentsí shirts. Bring ticket envelopes for each student in the group. (Lap Counters will hold the ticket envelopes until the students are finished running).
  • Walk with the class to the race track. While the students are warming up with the D.J., Lap Counters may go to the Race Headquarters (located by the track, under the awning) and pick up the markers from the Race for Cyberspace Committee.
  • During the Race, Lap Counters will stand by a colored flag designated for their class and cross off laps for students as each lap is completed. A lap counter must remain at the colored flag and cannot run laps with his/her child. Please ask Lap Counters to wear something that makes it easy for their students to identify them (for example, a large sombrero or a belt with a balloon tied to it).
  • Upon completion of the Race, Lap Counters will help the students remove their race bibs. Remove the safety pins and alphabetize the race bibs for the class. Turn the race bibs in, along with the marking pens and safety pins to the desk at the Race Headquarters.
  • Bring extra scissors to help open the Otterpops which should be stored in the cooler located next to each flag at the completion of the race. Additional Otterpops will be available at the Headquarter table.
  • Lap Counters will give each student their personalized ticket envelope.
  • Escort the students to the Prize Mall area. Ensure that students match the number on the prize with the number on the ticket box to avoid mix ups. (Prizes are sometimes moved accidentally.)

Water Attendant
Pour water in cups at one of the water stations along the track. Supervise the water station to prevent water fights. A parent who is a water attendant cannot be a lap counter at the same time. Please ensure that the water station is fully supplied for the next session before leaving.

Please make an initial contact with Parent Volunteers and briefly review their duties. Many parents enjoy helping at this event and of course, please encourage all parents to join us for the fun. Also, ask parents to bring spray bottles to spray the kids with water as they run.

A BIG Thank You to our Room Parents and Volunteers from the Race for Cyberspace Committee!!!
